Junior Tennis

The Shrewsbury Club offers leading tennis facilities and the largest team of coaches in Shropshire, who are all Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) qualified and licensed as well as being DBS checked and holding safeguarding qualifications.

The club hosts junior tennis classes every Tuesday and Saturday. Little ones can start young, from around the age of three, with Tots Tennis, and progress through the levels right up to the adults group when they reach around age 15.

Junior Tennis at The Shrewsbury Club

Young players can start at beginner level in our Junior Development Programme and advance over time to our Junior Performance Programme. The Shrewsbury Club's older juniors go on to represent the club's adult teams or stay and help out with the junior programmes as tennis leaders through Tennis Shropshire's Tennis Futures Programme.

The Junior programme is managed by Director of Tennis Simon Haddleton from inspire2coach, in partnership with The Shrewsbury Club. The club also has strong links with many local clubs from around Shropshire, including Newport's Boughey Gardens, Wem Tennis Club, Ludlow Castle, Tilstock, Lilleshall and Calverhall.

This provides a clear pathway for promising juniors within Shropshire to access the excellent performance coaching here at The Shrewsbury Club.

We are also delighted to host county training sessions here at the club for all county junior teams, with the sessions managed by inspire2coach and Nigel Hunter, the director of county coaching.

School Tennis

The Schools' Tennis Programme at The Shrewsbury Club is kindly sponsored by Budgen Motors and led by Simon Haddleton & Sophie Harbach. They regularly run regular demonstration days in local schools, hoping to spark an enthusiasm for the sport and to get children active.

Alongside the popular activity days, we are partnered by Shrewsbury Town Football Club's In The Community team and local schools to deliver high quality and high energy tennis coaching, both during curriculum time and after school.

In July 2016, the club successfully hosted its first-ever Wimbledon Schools' Festival which attracted more than 1,000 primary school children from Shrewsbury and the surrounding area to the club.

The day included a session of fun-based tennis skills and activities together with the opportunity to watch an exhibition match between two of the club's coaches.

It was a fantastic week of schools tennis at The Shrewsbury Club which we hope has inspired youngsters in the town to love tennis and pick up a racket.

There will be two festival weeks in 2018, so if your school would like to get involved please email [email protected]

Outreach Tennis

This outreach tennis programme takes place on The Shrewsbury Club's outdoor courts and is open to both club members and non-members. We guarantee each young person lots of individual attention and support as we ensure a ratio of no more than five juniors per coach.

Outreach Features

  • Small ratios: maximum 1:5
  • Low cost option: £25 joining fee
  • Continuous tennis: 45 weeks of the year programme
  • Flexible sessions: develop a session around your own family's schedule

Lessons are held seven days a week and, conveniently, they are arranged around the players/parents. If there is enough people to start a new group on any given day, then we gladly will!

It costs £25 to enrol on the programme and then £25 a month for a weekly coaching session. The Shrewsbury Club's outreach programme runs 45 weeks of the year, with our professional LTA qualified coaches delivering all the sessions.

Development Tennis

Our development programme at The Shrewsbury Club runs on a Tuesday evening and a Saturday morning on our fantastic indoor courts, which guarantees participants good tennis all year round.

The sessions are based around developing the basic skills of tennis while introducing players to point scoring and matches.

The programme is open to club members with many taking advantage of the other excellent facilities at the club after their lessons.

One big advantage of our development programme for parents/carers is that as your child improves and moves up the groups, their sessions will remain on the same say, allowing you to plan your diary effectively.

  • Mini Green (U10) 10-11am.

Academy Tennis

As younger players begin to improve via The Shrewsbury Club's outreach or development programmes, they may be selected to move into our more focused Performance Academy.

This is where we encourage them to play competitively in more competitions and take their tennis more seriously. Young people in the Performance Academy train a minimum of three times a week.

The Academy boasts a range of players from Shropshire county standard to top national players.

The aspiration of the group, led by ex-professional player Adam Wharf, is to produce high quality players that will move into professional tennis or full-time Academy members. Players start from around eight and play up to adult age.
