The Shrewsbury Club to take part in Shrewsbury celebration event as Queen’s Baton Relay comes to town on Monday

The Shrewsbury Club has been invited to take part in next week's Shrewsbury celebration event, as the Queen's Baton Relay comes to town on its way to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Some of our team, including tennis coaches, will be attending a huge, free family event at The Quarry between 4pm and 9pm on Monday (July 18).

Organised by Shropshire Council, with the support of Shropshire Festivals, the event will involve local schools, sports clubs, arts organisations and groups from across the county.

The Quarry will be hosting live music, performances and sporting fun, as well as food and drink stands.

Simon Haddleton, our director of tennis, said: “We are really looking forward to the event and are grateful for the opportunity to be involved in what will be a huge event for the town.

“We will have a range of tennis activities on offer, with our Tennis Factory equipment always popular with children, and it’s an ideal way for them to perhaps pick up a tennis racket for the first time.

“We are delighted to to have been invited to take part and events like this are always good fun."

Birmingham 2022 is staging the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games on July 28.

It is an epic journey across the Commonwealth, with The Queen’s Baton visiting all 72 nations and territories.

The Queen’s Baton Relay will arrive in Shrewsbury by helicopter at Shrewsbury Sports Village on Monday afternoon.

Carried by a team of specially selected baton bearers from across the region, it will visit the Flaxmill Maltings, Shrewsbury Castle, travelling through the town’s streets, and also experiencing a trip along the River Severn on its route to the celebration event in The Quarry.

The event in The Quarry is free to attend for all ages, but tickets must be booked in advance via this link
