Imagine Spa, Shrewsbury - our eye makeup tips

Here at Imagine Spa in The Shrewsbury Club, we think eyes need to be shown some more love…. It’s said that the eyes are the window to the soul and the first thing we notice about a person’s face when we meet them. Many of our facial treatments include special time and attention to the eye area and we know lots of clients prioritise taking care of their eyes and making them look their best. Knowing these simple tips and facts will help you to do the same in between visits!

Caring for your eyes

Caring for the skin around your eyes is hugely important. This is a super delicate are and often where we see the first signs of ageing. Wearing skin products with sunscreen included will do lots to protect the skin and prevent early signs of ageing from sun damage. If you don’t wear eye cream during the day or night, we recommend you start! Although, there are quite a few eye creams with anti-ageing or rejuvenating properties to choose from, Babor is the brand we recommend at Imagine Spa.

When you’re applying makeup or removing it, be careful of tugging or rubbing too harshly at the skin around your eyes. At the same time, it’s essential to use specialised products! Some creams aren’t made for your face as they contain harsher chemicals and colours, and washing with soap and water can be too severe at removing oil and irritate the eyes. A gentle eye cleanser for sensitive skin will work far more effectively than harsh soaps.

We can’t say enough about sleep! At least eight hours of good shuteye every night will help your eyes look beautiful, reduce redness and puffiness under the eye area. Also, making sure you have the right prescription glasses or contact lenses will prevent you from straining your eyes – and if you do wear contact lenses, make sure you care for them correctly!

Our four essential tips to wearing eye makeup

Our first tip for wearing eye makeup is to pay attention to your eye shape. Every eye is a unique shape, size and set and what looks good on one person may not look as good on you. Deeper set eyes might suffer from heavy, dark colours, whereas eyes that are close together might have this closeness exaggerated by inner-eye highlights.

The second tip is to only use quality cosmetics. It can be tempting to grab High Street products because they’re cheap and cheerful, but investing in top products makes a huge difference to your makeup experience. Many higher-end products are more expensive because the formulations are better, meaning the application, pigmentation and lasting power of your eye makeup is noticeably improved.

The third tip is to choose one feature of your face and concentrate on that. If deciding to accentuate your eyes, cheeks and lips, it’s best to choose one to make the prominent focus. For instance, dark, heavy, smoky eyes and then a nude lip and lightly bronzed cheeks.

The fourth tip is to use a primer. Face and eye primers and potions are a recent invention in the makeup world but are essentially a clear or light-coloured base you apply before any other cosmetics to ensure your makeup looks brighter and doesn’t budge. Trust me – it makes a world of difference!

Playing with colour

Argh, colour…! Colour can be scary for some but if you follow certain guidelines you’ll discover how much fun you can have and how good it can look.

Keep in mind your skin tone and eye shade when applying colour. Play with what will make your eye colour pop and what looks good against your skin. Warm-based shadows might look too orange on cool, pale skin, while cooler shadows might flatten and make sallow a darker skin tone.

One thing you can do when applying colour is to choose a colour theme. That definitely doesn’t mean red eyeshadow to match your lips and cheeks but rather that you have an idea of what colours will set each other off and not clash.

If you’re feeling adventurous you could even try a different coloured eye liner!

Day to night

It’s also recommended that you reserve darker, more dramatic looks for the night time. Heavier makeup at night can help accentuate your features greatly but it’s not particularly necessary in daylight and a lot of visible, heavy product can actually age the eye area and look a little harsh.

Switching from day to night eye looks can be done by easily adding a smoky shadow, some dark liquid or pencil liner or even a pair of false eyelashes for a real statement.

It’s all about having fun

If you’ve been stuck in a makeup rut for years but at the same time you’re unsure about the latest trends, you can’t go wrong with a light, natural look. A nude-tone eyeshadow and light application of mascara will always look classic and cool.

That’s not to say don’t experiment! Makeup is an art form and a way of expressing your creativity. Colour, shine and definition are all fun to play with. At the end of the day, if you feel you’ve gone overboard or don’t like how it ended up makeup can be washed off. It isn’t permanent and is a great way to experiment with change without committing to a whole new look!
