The Shrewsbury Club is hosting the prestigious World Tennis Tour W60 tournament, February 11th – 16th. World class tennis will make a return to the Club as we will host the biggest womens tennis tournament in the UK in 2019, outside of the grass court season and the Fed Cup. Heather Watson and Katie Boulter are set to lead a strong British challenge with German star Sabine Lisicki, runner-up in the 2013 Wimbledon singles final, also on the initial acceptance list. Boulter, the British No. 2, is currently ranked 97 in world and reached the second round of the Australian Open earlier this month. Watson, just outside the world’s top 100, was ranked as high as 38 in 2015 and won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon the following year.

Their Great Britain Fed Cup team mates Harriet Dart and Katie Swan are also in line to compete in the International Tennis Federation tournament which, for the first time at the Club, will feature evening matches, allowing spectators the chance to come and watch the tennis after work. French ace Oceane Dodin, champion at The Shrewsbury Club in both 2013 and 2014, and the Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova, currently second in the world doubles rankings, are among the players from around the world to have entered. Other British players on the entry list include Naomi Broady, Laura Robson and Maia Lumsden, the winner of the last professional tournament held at The Shrewsbury Club in November.

The Club will also be building stadium seating and full pre-match entertainment from the quarter-final rounds onwards. There will be free admission until the quarter finals, with tickets then available for the advanced stages of the tournament, a requirement of the International Tennis Federation. The tournament will also be live streamed around the world via the ITF website. The event promises to be a great opportunity for local tennis fans and Shropshire businesses to be a part of this amazing tennis event. The Club are providing a heated marquee adjacent to the Club entrance where hospitality will be provided before spectators enjoy the match inside the club.

Dave Courteen, managing director at The Shrewsbury Club, said: “ “It’s going to be a very strong line up and while the entry list can change between now and the tournament getting under way, it’s fantastic that so many top quality players are heading to Shrewsbury.

“It will be a real treat for local tennis fans to see a strong field competing here in Shropshire.

“We are delighted that four of the five members of the Great Britain Fed Cup team playing at the University of Bath at the start of next month have entered the event.

“The strength of this tournament is reflected by Sabine Lisicki, a past Wimbledon champion, currently being on the qualifying list while there’s so many good players not yet guaranteed a place in the qualifying rounds ahead of the main draw getting under way.”

There will be free admission for spectators on the first three days of the tournament, with tickets now available to be purchased from the quarter-finals onwards to enjoy the action from stadium seating.

Day tickets are priced £12 (£6 for club members) while a tournament pass for the whole week costs £25 (£15 for club members).
