Our 2017 Club Championships are underway!

Our 2017 Club Championships are underway!

The Shrewsbury Club Championships got underway last night and with a huge entry of almost 100 players it promises to be a fantastic event. With matches being played on Wednesday evenings between now and the end of February there should be plenty of activity on our indoor courts!

Last night saw the start of our Mens Singles & Ladies O30 doubles event with some great tennis seen across all the matches, starting at both 6.30pm & 8.00pm. Recently returned to the club, Mark Jones, started the Championships with a 6-4 6-1 victory over Matt Taylor with the tight first set proving pivotal! Second team doubles player, John Buckley, opened up with a strong performance against Mark Mitchell eventually battling to a 6-3 6-2 win. Other players making their way through the first round included; Ian James, Rik Richards, Matt Lynch, Angus McKirdy & Damon Airey. There was just one match outside of the Mens Singles event and that was in the Ladies O30 doubles where Jo Fotheringham & Eloise Owens won through 6-1 6-1 against Moriel Gidney & Di Dorrell in a match which was closer than the scoreline may suggest.

The Mens Singles will continue in full force next week with the remaining first round matches due to be played and what possibly is the most anticipated event in this years Championships, the Mixed Doubles, also getting underway.

Matches start from 6.30pm on all 6 indoor courts with a second round scheduled from around 8.00pm, so please feel free to come and support the players & watch some great tennis over the next few weeks.
