The benefits of Zumba at The Shrewsbury Club

Here at The Shrewsbury club we are continually investing in our facilities and timetable. We now offer over 80 fitness classes a week, for example, including Zumba. When it comes to having fun while losing weight, Zumba is an opportunity too good to pass up! If you’re not (yet) a fan of Spin but are looking for fitness that’s a whole lot more exciting than a walk in the park, it’s time to try Zumba!

What is Zumba all about?

You’ve probably heard about Zumba before and maybe even given one of our Shrewsbury classes a go. With over 1.2 million people getting their Zumba on in the UK alone, it’s obvious that the Columbian-originated fitness program is not just a craze, it’s here to stay. (1) But what is it and why is it so popular?

Zumba is a Latin-style dance class, combined with hip hop and other international styles such as belly dancing and Bollywood. (2) Depending on your current weight and how hard you work, you can burn anywhere between 430 and 1145 calories in an hour-long Zumba class. (3) Because it mixes dance moves with traditional exercises, e.g. lunging and squatting, you won’t notice you’re actually working out - bonus! It also helps strengthen your core and improves coordination, which is especially important as we get older.

Zumba isn’t about being an amazing dancer, or being able to follow the instructor move for move (you’re doing well if you can keep rhythm on your first time) but the more classes you take, the better you will get.

The social scene

Zumba is often described as one big party and is definitely a place to make new friends from the local area. As we like saying, we are not a gym – we are a club. Whether you come by yourself or not, by the end of the class you’re going to be laughing with people who might have been strangers at the beginning.

As well as the health and weight loss benefits, Zumba’s upbeat music and flash-mob style dancing is guaranteed to make you smile – you’ll always hear the sound of laughter bouncing around a Zumba class! As well as relaxing your muscles, laughing boosts the immune system and releases endorphins, and is another reason why Zumba is so popular. (4) How many times have you laughed whilst on the rowing machine…?!

Most of all, Zumba isn’t about getting it right or wrong, it’s about having fun and getting fit while you do it. If you’re a member you can book in online, but if you’re not then no problem – simply fill out the form below and we'll get in touch to arrange a free Zumba class for you! We can’t wait for you to join the party in Shrewsbury!
