Over 100 Children Head to Shrewsbury Club for Fundraising Tennis Tournament

The Shrewsbury Club hosts a junior tennis tournament on Sunday for more than 100 youngsters after successfully staging a similar event last year which raised more than £6,000 for the K12 Challenge.

Standing for Kids with 12 months to complete their challenge, the K12Challenge set children the goal of raising £100,000 for the Cavalier Centre project - an indoor arena, near Much Wenlock, for The Perry Riding for the Disabled Group -  and so far hundreds of children across Shropshire and beyond have joined together and been involved in a number of sporting challenges.

Mostly through individual sponsorship, they have brilliantly raised £97,000, with the idea for children to show how they can change people’s lives and make the world a better place.

The Cavalier Centre would allow disabled children and adults to enjoy carriage driving as well as riding and vaulting, with planning permission already secured.

This weekend's tennis tournament is aimed at juniors in three age categories -10 and under, 13 and under, and 17 and under, with prizes for the winners of each of the three sections. It is for children of all abilities and for some it will be their first chance to experience tournament tennis.

Alvin Ward, the manager of The Shrewsbury Club, said: "We are delighted to be supporting this event. We are a health club that is designed to provide activities for all the family and this event has such a wide appeal for youngsters.

"We also have a very active wheelchair tennis team based here at the club, so this is a charity close to our heart. We hope all the youngsters taking part will love their Shrewsbury Club experience and will want to return. It is wonderful that they are so keen to raise so much money for a worthwhile cause and every pound they raise will be matched by Barclays Bank.”

The tournament is sponsored by The Shrewsbury Club, Whittingham Riddell chartered accountants and FBC Manby Bowdler solicitors. There is no set entry fee for players although they are asked to make a minimum donation of £20 to the chosen charity.

The Shrewsbury Club will be open as normal throughout the weekend and spectators are welcome to enjoy Sunday's action.
