Bare Faced and Beautiful

It’s not always necessary or appropriate for a full face of makeup. The ‘well done’ look has its time and place but it’s usually desirable to have a natural everyday appearance. Our Imagine Spa Shrewsbury therapists explain how the ‘bare faced’ look can be beautiful.

The key to mastering a natural beauty look is to apply makeup sparingly and strategically. This will allow your natural complexion to shine through and emphasise your best features. Follow these steps to achieve a flawless ‘natural beauty’ look.

1. Start with a fresh, clean face

Make sure you use a facial cleanser suitable for your skin type. A facial wash that you rinse off using warm water will leave the skin feeling fresh.

However, you can use a cream cleanser and remove it with damp cotton wool pads if you prefer. To remove eye-makeup, always use a product that has been formulated for the sensitive eye area to avoid irritation.

2. Exfoliate and moisturise

A gentle, non-abrasive exfoliation cream used once or twice weekly will not only produce a youthful glow, but your skin care products will be able to penetrate better. Makeup will apply more easily and look fresher too.

It’s important to use a moisturiser with SPF in the day to keep skin hydrated and protected and a nourishing night cream in the evening to restore your skin while you sleep.

3. Flawless coverage

For a sheer look, swap the foundation for a tinted moisturiser. Use your fingertips to massage the product into the skin for a light finish.

For thicker coverage, use your regular cream/liquid foundation but apply it with a brush for a flawless finish.

4. Shade and tone

Emphasise your features by using bronzer or blush. Bronzers are a great way to create a natural glow so apply with a brush on to the bridge of your nose, cheeks and forehead.

Blush in soft, pink tones should be applied on the apple of your cheeks for a natural ‘blushing’ effect.

5. Illuminate and highlight

These products contain reflective ingredients such as mica and other minerals to catch the light. Illuminators are a must have in your makeup bag! A clever use of an illuminator can make a big difference.

Apply with a kabuki or stippling brush across the cheek bones and along the jaw line. For a more precise application; use a flat edged eyeshadow brush and sweep under the brow and above the upper lip line and across the cupid’s bow.

Remember, illuminators and highlighters will draw attention, so if you don’t want an area noticed - don’t illuminate it!

6. Concealer

This is a secret weapon against blemishes and dark circles. Firstly, ensure that the concealer matches your skin tone. Lightly apply concealer on blemishes, spots and red areas then gently blend to achieve a natural look.

You can also use your fingertips which work equally as well as a concealer brush when applying, but always make sure your fingers are clean.

7. Eye-makeup

Try not to use black liquid liners and volumising mascara as this can look too dramatic for a natural finish. Instead choose a soft kohl pencil and lash separating mascara. Apply the pencil lightly under the lower lashes and smudge with a foam applicator or cotton bud for a softer finish.

Finally curl your lashes and then apply one coat of mascara. Ensure you separate the lashes with a comb if necessary to avoid clumping.

8. Lips

Stick to a neutral or sheer gloss lip balm or lipstick. Choose a shade slightly darker than your natural lip for soft classic lips.
